Access points are required on any vehicle since you are pushing dents from the unpainted side most of the time. Obviously there is the glue and pull technique that should only be used when there are no other means of proper access as described in this module.(Some technician training courses only teach the glue and pull technique however it has been demonstrated that the push technique is far more effective than glue and pull and less risky in terms of damaging the paint work).
There are a variety of methods in locating access points. The remove and replace section ties closely with this module in that you should only remove and replace parts where access is required so please refer to both modules when completing this module.
Experienced technicians will know first hand on observation what is required. In most cases from a hailstorm perspective, the remove and replace is applied consistently in all cars so that the procedure is smooth throughout and PDR can be commenced quickly.
Generally, the popular access points include:
- under the bonnets on a stand or on the car through frames and bracing
- through open windows
- door access points between the rubber seal strips of the doors (also known as door jammer)
- door access points through the holes and openings such as wiring and rust proofing grommets
- rear light access to get to quarter panels
- access on the inside of the guard front quarter panels
- behind the roof lining and sun roofs for roof access (sometimes known as head liners)
- boot lid access points
- manufactured access (drilling holes)
